What principles or beliefs guide your approach to swimming?

For me – and possibly for you – swimming is much more than a sport or recreational activity. Beyond the obvious boost to our health, fitness and wellbeing swimming gives us less tangible but valuable benefits such as self-discipline, the opportunity to pursue excellence, adventures and personal discovery, to name a few.

The more you immerse yourself in swimming, the more you appreciate its potential to provide a guiding framework for life. To achieve that, examine the principles or beliefs that guide your approach to swimming.

If you haven’t done this before, take a moment now. What comes to mind? Use the questions below as prompts, if it helps.

  • How do you feel about your swimming ability? How much scope do you believe you have for development and improvement?

  • What about your approach to training? Are you curious and mindful or do you only do what you’re told?

  • Have you pigeonholed yourself as a certain type of swimmer or do you experiment and enjoy a wide range of swimming-related activities?

  • Is swimming just something you do or is it a core part of your being from which you draw broader lessons for life?
